Moving out of home is a big step – and an expensive one if you don't do the maths. These items belong in the budget.

One-off costs

  • Deposit: up to three months' rent. With a deposit guarantee without a bank deposit this chunk disappears; you pay an annual premium instead – with 10% off under 26.
  • Move: van, helpers, boxes: CHF 300 to 1,500.
  • Basics: bed, table, kitchen utensils, curtains. Second-hand saves a lot.

Monthly costs

  • Rent including service charges (rule of thumb: at most a third of net income)
  • Electricity and internet: CHF 80 to 150
  • Household and liability insurance: CHF 20 to 40
  • Serafe fee, mobile plan
  • Food, transport, leisure
